President Bola Tinubu felicitates Justice Solomon Olusola Hunponu-Wusu, a former judge of the Lagos State Judiciary, on his 80th birthday.

Born in Lagos in 1945, Justice Hunponu-Wusu was called to the Nigerian Bar and enrolled as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1973. He became a judge of the Lagos High Court in 1986 and retired in 2002 to start a private practice and consultancy firm.

During his legal career, the jurist made invaluable contributions to the legal profession and the nation.

His landmark ruling on Decree 43 of 1993, particularly in the case of Richard Akinnola v. General Ibrahim Babangida, remains a significant moment in Nigeria’s legal and media history. It strengthened the cause of press freedom by affirming the claimant’s right to sue on behalf of himself and other journalists.

President Tinubu lauds the eminent jurist for his dedication to upholding the rule of law, leadership in the judiciary and contributions to Nigeria’s jurisprudence.

The President trusts that the elder statesman will remain a source of wisdom and guidance to the legal profession and the nation, drawing from his vast experience and expertise.

Justice Hunponu-Wusu holds memberships in the International Bar Association, the National Council of State Court Management (Virginia, USA), and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is also a Nigerian Maritime Law Association Fellow, underscoring his multidisciplinary impact.

President Tinubu prays for the distinguished legal luminary’s continued health and happiness.
