The rapid increase in the number of global COVID-19 cases and the declaration of the WHO of the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic underscored the need for a coordinating body to oversee the COVID-19 response efforts in Nigeria. In this vein, President Muhammadu Buhari constituted the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF), which was inaugurated on 17th March 2020, to coordinate and oversee Nigeria’s multi-sectoral inter-governmental efforts to contain the spread and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
This coordinating body was to be in effect for a period of six months, but with growing concerns around the ongoing outbreaks in Nigeria, President Buhari then approved the extension of the PTF mandate till December 2020. This document captures the details of the performance of the task force from 17th March through December 2020 as well as the PTF transition plans for its functionalities and resources beyond the End-Term date.
The report highlights the PTF’s achievements, key challenges encountered, lessons learned, recommendations for consideration, and contributions of key stakeholders (donors and partners) as well as the transition plan for the continued management of Nigeria’s COVID-19 pandemic response.
